Sciatica Nerve Pain Study
This Study May Last Up to 15 Months in Omaha, Nebraska
This study is testing VER-01, a cannabis-based medication containing THC, to see if it can safely reduce long-term nerve pain in the lower back/leg (chronic painful lumbosacral radiculopathy).
The study is mainly for people who:
- Have had this type of nerve pain for a long time.
- Need medication to manage their pain.
- Have tried common non-opioid pain medications like ibuprofen/NSAIDs or acetaminophen (Tylenol) without getting enough relief, or couldn’t take them because of side effects or other medical reasons.
People with chronic nerve pain often have limited treatment options after medications like ibuprofen or Tylenol don’t work.
Opioids are sometimes used for this type of pain, but long-term opioid use can cause problems such as:
- Dependence and addiction
- Constipation, nausea, and vomiting
- Sleep problems
- Increasing tolerance, meaning higher doses may eventually be needed
- Increased sensitivity to pain in some people
- Potentially fatal overdose
The researchers are therefore trying to determine whether VER-01 could provide another option for managing chronic nerve pain without relying on opioids.
